This past weekend, hubby and I watched a movie about an author who reluctantly sold her rights to a book she wrote to a huge movie studio. It was based on the truth, but it wasn't totally the truth. Hubby shared that he read somewhere that the studio head, played by Tom Hanks (one of my very favorist actors of all time), was not shown smoking and this particular studio head smoked like a chimney. The article criticized the movie for this point. Really? That's what decided the "realness" of the movie for you? That the character portrayed on the big screen didn't puff away? The fact that the female character vascillated between memory and present tense didn't't bother you, but the lack of cigarettes did? Buddy, whoever you are, you need to get a life!
Movies, no matter how real we think they are, no matter how "stick to the facts" we say they are, are make believe. I reiterate for those who aren't sure they heard me. They are make believe. You can be sure that a plot twist or a juicy scandal would be inserted in even the blandest of true stories if the movie maker thought it would get you to buy a ticket. For heaven's sake, documentaries are even edited to give us more action! This is what makes going to the movies so much fun. Movies are ENTERTAINMENT. Their sole purpose is to take your mind off of whatever you are obsessing about at the moment and suspend reality.
Anyone who doesn't comprehend that, needs to rethink. And get on the boat to Fantasyland, which is the starting point for movies in the first place. Oh, and stub out your cigarette, you're in the theatre, buddy!
