The ambivalence of the season following the season is confusing
Would the Wise Men have stopped to converse with us about our confusion?
The "Thank God its over" conundrum with the "It's over already?"
The pinging of the evergreen needles is counterpointed with the ticking of the clock
The false candles in the window reminding us of the need for light at 4:30
The sweets festooning the dining room table are far outweighed at the scales in the bathroom
Red and green poinsettias stand amidst the other greenery
Ostentatiously preening in the window as the philodendron snickers silently,
"It won't be long," it whispers, "you'll be just green like the rest of us."
The fireplace, never used except during this time of year, goes dormant, sullenly
hoarding it's heaped up piles of ashes for another winter.
The wreaths on the door, the festive flag flapping on the winter breeze, even the electric wooden tree, painted to resemble the evergreen in the corner will all soon fold themselves up for a long winter's nap.
The bareness of the walls, floors and doors a testament to the fleeting of seasons and the march of the hours.
Are you sad or glad it's done? It's hard to say, being of two minds.

Ambivalent, confused Wise Men: ha, right. I picture them wandering away from the stable, having delivered their gifts. Balthazar -- the reluctant one; the other two had really had to work on him before he agreed to the journey in the first place -- Balthazar says, "So... Is that it?"
I really hope you're kidding (or exaggerating for dramatic effect) about the fireplace which doesn't get used except during The Season.
We've still got to take our stuff down. Never a favorite activity (you will note that The Boy shared no memories of it), but this year even less so because of how weird and ungratifying the holiday was. The Missus promises me that next year will be better because we will start everything sooner, but this has all the credibility of the old "We're cutting back on Christmas this year" disclaimers, i.e., none at all. I'm becoming a cynic and I'm barely out of Boyhood.
P.S. I just looked over at the little blog-archive tally there on the right and saw that this pushes you up to more than 75 posts. Go, cynth!
